General Information
_The Federated Union of Democratic Colonies is an interstellar nation
consisting of multiple worlds united under a central government. It is a
relatively young state, having been established on December 1, 1961,
and having achieved faster than light travel less than a century later
due to the assistance of the Amaranthine Imperium.
It is a constitutional republic, with a two tier legislative assembly,
an executive Presidential office, and a powerful judiciary.
While the Democratic Colonies previously operated as a subsidiary state under the guidance and control of the Amaranthine Imperium, the mysterious disappearance of the enigmatic Dersconi and their Amaranthine Imperium has left the Democratic Colonies to fend for itself and seek its own destiny.

__ Governmental Structure
The Federal Legislative Assembly
At the Federal level, there exists a two tier Legislative Assembly, consisting of the General Assembly and the Senate. Although bills passed by the Legislative Assembly may be vetoed by the President, a Presidential veto may be overridden by a 65% majority in both levels of the Legislative Assembly.
The Secretaries
The departments of the Federal Government, such as Defense, Foreign Affairs, Education, Commerce, and so on, have Secretaries that oversee their operation. Secretaries are appointed by the Legislative Assembly, with approval by the President. Should a President disapprove of an appointed Secretary, a 65% majority in the Legislative Assembly is able to overrule the President. Should the President and a Secretary disagree on a matter and a Presidential veto is used, a Secretary with the support of 55% of the Legislative Assembly can override the President. The Attorney General and the Surgeon General, heads of the Department of Law and Order and the Department of Health respectively, are equivalent to Secretaries and hold "Secretary" as a secondary title. No limit to the time a person serves as a Secretary exists.
The President
The President serves as the chief executive of the nation, but is limited by the Legislative Assembly and the Secretaries within the internal framework of the Democratic Colonies, and the authorities of the Amaranthine Imperium externally. If the President-Elect receives less then 50% of the popular vote, confirmation of his or her appointment must be provided by a majority of the Legislative Assembly. The President is elected in a nation wide election every 5 years, and no limit on the number of terms served exists. The President can veto a bill but can be overridden by a 65% majority in each level of the Legislative Assembly, or 55% and the support of the Federal Secretary whose area of responsibility includes the matters included in the bill.
The Federal Supreme Court
The Federal Supreme Court serves in one capacity to ensure that any laws passed by the Federal Government adhere to the Constitution of the Democratic Colonies, the Unification Act of 1961, and the Charter of Rights.
