Democratic Colonies Navy
DCNS Gallant leaving planetary orbit
The Democratic Colonies Navy retains its seagoing traditions and culture while utilizing advanced technology to serve as the Democratic Colonies' primary force projection and territorial defense arm. The Navy is the largest single branch of the military, and includes the the Marine Corps as well as its own special operations units under its authority.
Ship Registry
The Democratic Colonies Navy currently maintains on the ship registry:
- 1,429 x Lewis and Clarke Class Modular Corvette
- 258 x New Frontier Class Light Cruiser
- 8 x Nova Class Light Cruiser
- 77 x Javelin Class Heavy Cruiser
- 16 x Balmora Class Command Cruiser
- 52 x Surus Class Support Ship
Ship Tactics and Roles
Lewis and Clarke Class Modular Corvettes, while not sufficiently powerful to deal with hostile capital ships, serve a valuable role in supporting larger vessels by acting as a scouting and screening force. In independent operations without the presence of larger vessels, these corvettes capably perform routine patrol operations to protect areas against pirate activity and monitor space for any problems which might require greater attention.
New Frontier Class Light Cruisers serve as the primary space combatant of the DC Navy, typically using its guided missiles fitted with nuclear or bomb-pumped laser warheads to engage hostile vessels at long ranges. As distances close, while missile fire will continue, the New Frontier's spinally mounted L-200 Series High Output Laser generally becomes viable against erratically moving targets once they are within a 3 light second (roughly 900,000 kilometer) range. Against stationary targets, the L-200 Series High Output Laser is effective to even greater ranges.
Nova Class Light Cruisers, while few in number, serve to fill an important gap in DC naval capability as most DC Navy capital ships do not feature any substantial space to surface fire support capabilities. Nova Class Cruisers, able to provide magnetically accelerated 450 mm cannon fire, is able to provide space to surface fire support and non-nuclear bombardment capabilities that the DC Navy would otherwise lack.
Javelin Class Heavy Cruisers generally engage targets at long distance standoff ranges, and typically operate in support of other DC Navy vessels. Vessels of this class in DC Navy service very rarely operate independently, and generally attempt to avoid closer range combat.
Balmora Class Command Cruisers serve as the fleet command vessels of the Democratic Colonies Navy. These vessels feature relatively light armament, instead mounting extensive command, control, and communications equipment, as well as an advanced sensor suite. Vessels of this class typically remain as distant from direct engagement with hostile vessels as possible.
Surus Class Support Ships fill a number of roles and serve as high capacity cargo ships, troop transports, and motherships to small vessels and drones as well as Lewis and Clarke Class Modular Corvettes. These vessels feature no offensive armament whatsoever, and exercise great caution in avoiding hostile engagement.
